The first part of January is one of my favorite times of the year. Almost everyone is filled with hope and anticipation waiting to see what lies ahead. To many people, it is a much-needed fresh start as they breathed a sigh of relief when the ball dropped ringing in the New Year. Sadly, 2011 was the worst year ever for many people. At the same time, others were sad to see it end because the last few months had been the greatest they have ever seen. Personally, I had a little bit of both.

My family lost a precious jewel last year as my mother passed away. While at the same time, I was working with this great church and now have the honor to serve as their pastor. While losing my mother was one of the worst things I have experienced, coming to Dyllis Baptist Church is certainly one of my greatest experiences. This is not to mention that we have seen close to forty professions of faith and baptized almost twenty in the past five months. To God be the glory!

Now, as a new year is upon us, we should seek a renewed sense of purpose. We don’t want to graze around in the glories of days gone by; nor do we want to sulk in the slums of yesteryear. Rather, we should have a bright look on the great things God has set before us. God is faithful and I am excited about what He is doing in my life, my family’s life, and our church’s life over the next few months.

Of course, there will be bumps in the road, but keep in mind a great quote by a person so famous they need not be mentioned, “You can’t have mountains unless you have valleys.” Last year I learned that the deeper the valley, the sweeter the mountaintop. Keep that in mind this year as you go through those inevitable valleys. When you get to those great parts of the year, never forget by whose grace you are standing there. Let’s make it a great year for the glory of God and the cause of Christ..

With hope,

Pastor Scott
